80 Ways to follow Research, Science and Education on Mastodon

Last week, an appeal was shared on LinkedIn (because, yes... for now it is still where you reach people to point out that there is more than LinkedIn) by Bart Knubben (Forum for Standardisation), encouraging the ECP Platform for the Information Society to also post and communicate via Mastodon. This sparked a valuable follow-up: a growing list of organisations that are already using Mastodon to engage with their communities, ranging from municipalities and provinces to ministries and SURF.

Through this exchange, and thanks to Babette Knauer (University of Groningen Library), a broader question emerged: what does the Dutch education and research landscape have to offer on open, decentralised platforms like Mastodon?

The answer is: a great deal.....and with remarkable diversity.

For anyone interested in following inspiring organisations and individuals in education, research, and open knowledge, this cheat sheet offers 80 pointers. But make no mistake: this is just a small selection. There are thousands of equally interesting organisations and people already active, as well as many institutions that could benefit from becoming more visible and engaged on this open and decentralised platform.

A platform that aligns exceptionally well with core values such as humanity, autonomy, and justice.
