The advanced computing and networking program at SURF strives to comprehend the impact of different technologies on scientific applications. One such promising technology is programmable/configurable hardware, and in particular FPGAs. We attempt to investigate the impact and the role of this technology in the future of HPC ecosystem. To achieve this goal, we have initiated a collaboration with the Dutch hardware acceleration network, and together we received the 4TU.NIRICT grant to boost this technology and create the FPGA community within the Netherlands. The plan is to create a platform to gather FPGA researchers and experts from both academia and industry. Therefore, SURF in collaboration with the HWAcc network has started to organize a series of FPGA workshops known as FIRE: FPGA Innovation Research Exchange. In parallel, we have collaborated to provide a survey paper about (recent) FPGA research and activities in Dutch-affiliated universities and also in industry.
We inaugurated the FIRE FPGA event on June 21-22, 2023: https://communities.surf.nl/en/future-computing-and-networking/article/fire-fpga-innovation-research-exchange
The second edition of FIRE workshop was hosted by SURF on December 6th, 2023: https://communities.surf.nl/en/future-computing-and-networking/article/fire-fpga-innovation-research-exchange-second-edition
On June 27th, 2024 SURF and HWAcc community organized the third edition of FIRE symposium. This event was focused on tools and HW platforms for accelerating AI workloads. We had two keynote speakers: 1) Koen Bertels from University of Gent who talks about quantum computing, and 2) Kees van Berkel from TU/e who talks about computing with cellular automata.
In addition, we had interesting presentations from industry such as Groq, Innatera, Julia Hub, Altera and AMD. We also had lightning talks from Dutch-affiliated university researchers. You can find the slides of all the presentations at the symposium via this link: https://surfdrive.surf.nl/files/index.php/s/rUrGMItYbBnUyhH
The Fourth edition of FIRE FPGA event with a focus on architectural innovation will be held on December 6th, 2024 at SURF in Utrecht. If you would like to be informed about this event and also the upcoming FIRE FPGA events, you can register for our mailing list here: https://forms.gle/MgKKkrhxQMS4jyPF6
