FIRE (FPGA Innovation Research Exchange) – Sixth Edition

On April 24th, 2026, SURF and the Dutch Hardware Acceleration Network organized the joint HWAcc workshop and sixth edition of the FIRE (FPGA Innovation Research Exchange). Hosted at Wageningen University, this event focused on the theme: "Computational Challenges and High-Performance Technologies for Life Sciences."

Sponsored by 4TU.NIRICT, this workshop marks the 7th event in the overall FIRE series. The initiative co-organized by SURF, the Hardware Acceleration Network NL, and Wageningen University aims to bring together FPGA/GPU practitioners, computer science and engineering experts, scientific computing specialists, application owners, and HPC providers to exchange ideas and discuss cutting-edge solutions.

Event Highlights & Presenters
The workshop featured insights into the computational hurdles facing the life sciences, spotlighting a keynote speech by Maureen van Eijnatten from KeyGene on how AI and autonomous agents are revolutionizing plant breeding. Attendees heard from a diverse lineup of academic and industrial pioneers, including:

  • Research Universities: UTwente, Wageningen University, University of Maastricht, Radboud University, and the National Technical University of Athens
  • Industry Leaders: KeyGene, QBayLogic, and VLV Tech
