FIRE-NL: Workshop on FPGA Innovation Research Exchange in the Netherlands

SURF and the Dutch Hardware Acceleration network organized an international FIRE workshop at FPL conference. The conference was held in Leiden, and the FIRE workshop was on September 2nd, 2025.

The workshop highlighted the growing importance of FPGA technology for high-performance computing and data analytics (HPCDA), emphasizing its superior energy efficiency compared to GPUs and CPUs. Despite these advantages, FPGA adoption remains limited due to complex programming and lack of awareness beyond the FPGA community. Building on the success of the FIRE initiative and the HW Acceleration Network NL, which have fostered a vibrant Dutch FPGA ecosystem, this workshop aims to showcase Dutch research, catalyze international collaboration, and address emerging challenges in adaptive computing platforms that combine FPGAs with CPUs and AI accelerators.

At this event, we had invited speakers from our community to present FPGA activities within the Netherlands. It was a half day workshop with three sessions. In the first session, researchers from ETH Zurich, TU Delft and VU present their work on using adaptive computing platforms (Versal) for non-AI applications. In the second session, we had presentations from QbayLogic and TU Delft where they to talk about increasing the abstraction level of hardware design. In the third session, we highlighted Dutch research on using FPGAs in various applications in the field by researchers from TU/e, ESA and Optiver.
