On 9 February, the ORI community gathered at Saxion University of Applied Sciences in Deventer for an inspiring and energising meet-up. We are incredibly grateful to our hosts at Saxion for their warm welcome. Finding the main entrance, the theater and the rooms for the breakouts was a challenge, but our ORI community has problem solving as a key skill, no one got super lost.
And of course, no visit to Deventer would be complete without the famous Deventer Bijtje, a spiced reminder that building a commons also happens in the informal moments between sessions.
The Netherlands Research Portal, hosted on OpenAIRE is now live! It is the successor of NARCIS, providing an overview of publications, datasets, and projects across all Dutch research institutions.
How complete, accurate and open is the research information we rely on every day? A new report from the PID-to-Portal project introduces the ORI Monitoring Framework, a use-case driven approach to understanding and improving the quality of Dutch open research information. Developed together with the Dutch Barcelona Declaration Network, the framework will help set priorities on what elements to monitor and improve, and why that is important by linking it to use cases that bring the value of using open research information. This framework is a crucial starting point to enable monitoring to identify metadata gaps, and how we can work together to close them. 📄 Read the report
On 3 April, 2020, the Special Interest Group (SIG) Digital Assessment organised a second webinar together with SURF, following on from the webinar of 27 March, to share experiences around online proctoring as a solution for summative remote assessment. More than a hundred people watched the webinar live. During the webinar, we offered the stage to three online proctoring providers: RPnow, ProctorExam, and Proctorio, but first, we kicked off with a Q&A panel of experts from educational institutions.
In 2022 the SURF Open Innovation Lab launched "XR on Tour", in which we will visit various institutions and events. The goal of the tour is to inspire and find potential new use(r)s of different forms of eXtended Reality (XR, i.e. virtual, augmented and virtual reality), to strengthen connections with existing XR hubs and local communities, and in general to promote XR as a technology that can be beneficial to research and education in The Netherlands.
OpenAI has launched a new service, ChatGPT that combines the power of its language model GPT-3 with the ease of use of a chatbot interface. The AI community is buzzing with this new development, but what does this mean for education? With the increasing abilities and availability of language models, it becomes hard to judge text on face-value. This is a trend we already mentioned in SURF’s recent Promises of AI in Education report [1]. So, what does this mean for education? Are these systems good enough to pass standard academic assessment?
