At the SURF Open Innovation Lab we like to keep track of technical developments in XR technology, and one of the ways of doing that is by evaluating the latest hardware (both by ourselves, as well as asking feedback from the SURF community).
On 26 October the first set of Quest Pro headsets from Meta was delivered world-wide, for those who ordered early, which included SURF as well. Here, we'll summarize some initial impressions, after trying out the Quest Pro for a couple of hours. The main reference points are other XR headsets with similar features, i.e. the Microsoft HoloLens 2, the Varjo XR-3 and everyone's current favourite, the Meta Quest 2.
Note that we will undoubtedly tweak these conclusions after much more use, including giving demonstrations of the Quest Pro during XR on Tour and getting feedback on it, and will update the text here where needed. But first impressions are also worth something, hence this article.
Edit 27/10/22: clearified some things in the text, but no major updates
