In this SURF community, we want to bring experts interested in advanced computing and networking together. This community aims to create a space to share experiences, proof of concepts, possible applications, and impact with topics like Quantum Technologies, Specialized Computing Architecture & Energy Efficiency, and Network innovation for future research & education challenges.
‘AI’ is niet de eerste technologie met revolutionaire pretenties in onderwijsland en zal ook niet de laatste zijn. Maar goed onderwijs is mensenwerk waarin technologie hoogstens een middel is, nooit het doel. Aan de hand van inzichten uit de lespraktijk en onderzoek op het gebied van pedagogiek, onderwijsvernieuwing en cognitiewetenschap laat ik zien hoe we helderder kunnen denken over AI in het onderwijs. De populariteit van ‘AI’ wordt vaak gezien als argument voor onafwendbaarheid, maar kan beter gebruikt worden als een lens die grotere vraagstukken rondom digitalisering en automatisering in het onderwijs zichtbaar maakt. Uiteindelijk draait het onderwijs niet om technologie maar om mensen, hun interacties, en hun waarden. Kun je chatbots al verantwoord inzetten in het onderwijs? Silvester Draaijer, programmamanager van VU Education Lab, experimenteert met AI tutorbots en AI prompts voor onderwijsontwerp. Hij is enthousiast over de eerste resultaten. ‘De op leren gerichte chatbots zijn gemaakt met ‘Retrieval-Augmented Generation’, waardoor ze minder hallucineren.’
On 9 February, the ORI community gathered at Saxion University of Applied Sciences in Deventer for an inspiring and energising meet-up. We are incredibly grateful to our hosts at Saxion for their warm welcome. Finding the main entrance, the theater and the rooms for the breakouts was a challenge, but our ORI community has problem solving as a key skill, no one got super lost.
And of course, no visit to Deventer would be complete without the famous Deventer Bijtje, a spiced reminder that building a commons also happens in the informal moments between sessions.
The significant changes in the supercomputing landscape lead HPC centers to broaden their choices of computer architectures and to take a pivotal role in adapting state-of-the-art technology. This, lead to an increase in computing power and to a diversification of the existing computing architectures. Thus, following the upcoming hardware and software trends in supercomputing is crucial for the development of newer and faster computational methods for science and industry.
The innovation project “Compute systems technology assessment” is a collaborative effort between the SURF Open Innovation Lab (SOIL) aims to understand the potential of newer HPC architectures for a wide range of scientific computing workloads, and to promulgate the acquired knowledge/expertise with the academic and industrial community.
The SURF organisation conducts knowledge sessions, which guides researchers to adapt to the latest available technology, thus lowering the threshold required to work with newer computing architectures. With this in mind, the SURF Open Innovation Lab (SOIL) in collaboration with University of Amsterdam and NIKHEF organised a webinar session targeting application portability to AMD-GPU accelerators.
The webinar session featured four presentations focussed not only on the theoretical part of the AMD GPU architecture, but also on the practical aspects of running a ported legacy application on AMD GPUs. During the 90 minutes of the webinar session, live demonstrations of code portability were conducted, and a GPU ported computational chemistry application was presented.
The webinar was conducted with a vast and active participation of users outside of SURF, which not only provided a very positive feedback on the content of the session, but also expressed the desire to experiment with the existing AMD hardware.

The OpenAIRE Graph is an open access scholarly knowledge graph (SKG) resulting from the aggregation of research entity metadata records (properties and links) from scholarly communication data sources. Funders, organizations, researchers, research communities and publishers can use the OpenAIRE Graph to monitor, discover, and navigate the open science record as a whole.
How complete, accurate and open is the research information we rely on every day? A new report from the PID-to-Portal project introduces the ORI Monitoring Framework, a use-case driven approach to understanding and improving the quality of Dutch open research information. Developed together with the Dutch Barcelona Declaration Network, the framework will help set priorities on what elements to monitor and improve, and why that is important by linking it to use cases that bring the value of using open research information. This framework is a crucial starting point to enable monitoring to identify metadata gaps, and how we can work together to close them. 📄 Read the report
