Learning spaces are an essential element of the educational process, playing a great role in the development of learning communities and in facilitating the learning experience. “Learning spaces” refer both to physical spaces such as classrooms or lecture theatres and virtual spaces such as online learning platforms and webinar rooms. In order to achieve high teaching and learning standards, learning spaces, both physical and virtual, need to have thorough pedagogical foundations, which are regularly revisited and adapted to the various teaching goals and activities. Learning spaces sometimes tend to be ignored in favour of the content being taught, but they are very often likely to shape the delivery of the content and the learning experience.
Physical learning spaces
There is currently a great focus on designing our online spaces to encourage interaction, while physical spaces are normally simply taken for granted as “something we can’t change”. But they are closely connected to the learning goals and teaching formats as well as to the relation between students and teachers and among students. The setup of the classroom can limit or facilitate the amount and level of interactivity and the potential for active learning.
Flexible learning spaces, where one can change the setup and seating according to the planned learning activity, are an ideal solution. Unfortunately, not all universities offer such facilities, and most of the time we need to adjust our teaching to the exiting space. However, there are a few things to keep in mind and try to optimise as much as possible:
Light (natural light, ideally);
Air & temperature;
Seating (chairs and tables; personal space);
Facilities (power outlets, access to water, etc).
There is a distinction to be made between formal and informal learning spaces. Whereas classrooms and lecture theatres can be categorised as “formal”, learning is not confined to these spaces and very often takes place elsewhere, inside the school and beyond. In order to design a coherent learning experience it’s important to try to find out where students like to learn and develop those spaces to enhance their potential. Examples of informal learning spaces are hallways, cafeteria, etc. Both formal and informal spaces should be inclusive and accessible, in order to offer equal opportunities to all students and staff.
Another important topic is the presence of technology inside the physical learning space. Is it useful or disruptive for learning? After a year of teaching and learning online, our perception of how technology can contribute to learning is definitely changing. Ideally, technology should be seamlessly integrated: easily available to facilitate learning (e.g. research, group collaboration, contact with external experts) but also easy to “switch off” when the focus needs to be on face-to-face interaction. Regardless of the use of technology, when designing or adapting a learning space it is important to keep in mind the idea of space as an enabler of the learning and creative process.
A post-pandemic vision of physical learning spaces
As we're slowly going back on campus, how about we take a bit of time to rethink the campus space we actually want to go back to. While being forced to go into (mostly) unfamiliar territory and teach in a new environment, we became aware of some of the mechanics of teaching and learning that we did not have a chance to observe before the pandemic: how students learn, what support they need and in which form, what spaces they prefer for different activities etc. We have been putting quite a bit of effort into designing online courses and I am convinced the insights we got in this process can be put to good use once we are back on campus.
So, let's deconstruct and reinterpret the various physical learning spaces, formal and informal: the lecture hall, the lab, the cafeteria, the library, the hallways… Here are some questions and thoughts to guide us:
What do students want when they are back on campus? Don’t just guess, try to talk to them about this, be open. If there ever was a time to “shake things up”, it’s now. this is also a good starting point for a discussion on how they learn and can give us useful insights into how we can support them , regardless of the environment.
Let’s think of learning as a permanent flow, not confined to spaces and media. What kind of environment - and what physical features (spatial arrangement, furniture, light, facilities,…) can enable this process, or at least are not likely to stifle it? Think formal, informal, on and off campus.
What can we take from the online environments back into the classroom? It can be specific tools (think Mentimeter or similar tools); it can be ways of doing things (e.g. how we interact, how we support students- see virtual office hours-, how students work together, etc).
How can we implement these changes? Designing and implementing learning spaces requires the involvement of various stakeholders (faculty, research and teaching staff, administration, students, IT & building infrastructure) and a clear communication strategy is the key to a successful outcome.

Sinds we een noodgedwongen omslag hebben moeten maken naar online onderwijs, hebben we veel geleerd over hoe we onderwijs anders kunnen vormgeven. Nu onderwijs weer face-to-face gegeven kan worden, willen we gedeeltelijk weer terug naar onderwijsvormen die we op afstand niet konden bieden, maar willen we ook vasthouden aan elementen die we tijdens Covid-Teaching hebben toegepast. Maar hoe?

Met haar nieuwe kaartspel “Het lokaal als instrument” helpt Lotte van Egmond van Lot To Learn docenten stap voor stap naar een passende opstelling voor een klaslokaal. In vier stappen ontdekt de speler welke opstelling het meest passend is voor een leeractiviteit. Het spel kan alleen of met collega’s gespeeld worden, en leidt vooral tot een waardevol gesprek. Reden genoeg om Lotte op te zoeken voor een interview.
Na 2 jaar voorzitterschap heeft Marij Veugelers onlangs de voorzittershamer overgedragen aan Jasper van Winden.
Mede door de inspanningen van Marij en het hele kernteam is in 2 jaar tijd de SIG Learning Spaces uitgegroeid tot een volwaardige SIG met veel volgers en veel activiteiten.
Op vrijdag 12 november 2021 organiseert de SIG Virtuality, een netwerk voor kennisdeling in het Hoger Onderwijs, op de Christelijke Hogeschool te Ede een dag met een serie workshops rond VR/AR.
Op deze landelijke dag zullen docenten en ontwikkelaars in het HO elkaar ontmoeten om de kansen te ervaren rond Virtual Reality en Augmented Reality, tegenwoordig samengevat in de term XR (extended reality).
Het thema is Virtually Real 2021: wat kan XR technologie ons in het onderwijs geven nu we naar intensiever (online) onderwijs toe moeten? Is VR bijvoorbeeld een aanvullende oplossing voor offline praktijkonderwijs? Welke ontwikkelingen zijn er op dit gebied en wat kunnen we concreet van (online) 3D technologie verwachten? Waar zien we het gebruik van simulaties en gaming rond en met XR?
Op deze dag komen niet alleen deze vragen aan bod, maar ook zullen de deelnemers een groot aantal toepassingen in het onderwijs kunnen ervaren. Met presentaties en demonstraties wordt weer duidelijk dat het gebruik van deze technologie een duurzame plek in het onderwijs heeft gekregen, op kleine schaal maar met grote impact.

Hybride onderwijs en hybrid classrooms hebben de afgelopen anderhalf jaar een grote vlucht genomen. Maar wat is hybride onderwijs precies? Wat heb je ervoor nodig? En wat betekent hybride onderwijs voor docenten en studenten? Michel Jansen (SURF) en Marij Veugelers (Veugelers Consultancy en oud-UvA) hebben een overzicht gemaakt in een nieuwe online uitgave.
De zesde Innovative Learning Spaces Summit trapte vorige week af met een interactieve workshop over hoe je online actief leren in grote groepen kunt faciliteren. De hele sessie was in Zoom met 90 deelnemers en werd begeleid door dr. Prusko, werkzaam in het Teaching and Learning Lab van Harvard. Zij modelleerde (voordoen in onderwijstermen) gedurende de hele workshop wat je kan doen met een grote groep, zonder informatie te zenden maar door met elkaar in gesprek te gaan. Goed voorbeeld doet goed volgen is het idee. Ze begon met een welkomstwoord en de vraag of we onszelf wilde introduceren door o.a. de vraag te beantwoorden ‘how is your heart?’ Dat leverde mooie reacties op in de chat. In de tussentijd gaf ze toelichting op de agenda. Uitstekend begin! Vervolgens gingen we gezamenlijk kort mediteren om focus te krijgen. Daarna zijn we in duo’s en vervolgens ook in groepjes in break-out rooms met elkaar aan de slag gegaan. We kregen gerichte vragen mee om ons op weg te helpen. Telkens met het doel om, terwijl we als deelnemers aan het leren waren, kennis met elkaar te delen over actief leren in grote groepen. We legden onze discussies vast in verschillende online documenten die waren klaargezet. Het was een inspirerende en leerzame workshop voor docenten die met grote groepen werken, omdat er diverse werkvormen gebruikt werden. Bijvoorbeeld 'de waterval' waarbij dr. Prusko ons vroeg in de chat te zetten wat we onder actief leren verstonden, maar nog niet op 'zenden' te drukken. Ze telde vervolgens af waarna alle deelnemers tegelijkertijd op 'zenden' drukten met als resultaat dat er een waterval aan antwoorden op het scherm verscheen. Zo ervaar je dat alle deelnemers meedoen. Omdat de workshop goed was voorbereid en alle functies van Zoom volop werden benut voelde ik me constant betrokken. Ik heb geen andere workshops/presentaties kunnen bijwonen, maar ik begreep dat alles is opgenomen.
Vanuit het team Procurement & Contracting binnen SURF hebben een Dynamisch Aankoopsysteem (DAS) ingericht voor video software en gerelateerde diensten.
Op het moment van schrijven zijn 17 leveranciers (software vendors en resellers) op basis van referentievereisten en contractvoorwaarden toegelaten. Graag zouden we jullie kennis willen laten maken met het Dynamisch Aankoopsysteem. Hiervoor organiseren voor de Nederlandse en Ierse instellingen een webinar op 7 oktober aanstaande (link). Dit betekent dat het webinar in het Engels wordt gegeven.
Het 6de Innovative Learning Spaces congres van 15-17 september verhuist naar Berlijn.
Helaas kan vanwege de huidige COVID richtlijnen van Nederland en daardoor de beperkingen voor sprekers en deelnemers het jaarlijkse Innovative Learning Spaces congres niet in Amsterdam plaatsvinden.
Eind vorige week zijn alle deelnemers en sprekers geinformeerd dat het hele congres verhuist naar Berlijn. Nu is reeds al bekend dat 70 % van de sprekers aanwezig kan zijn in Berlijn.
Voor het congres zijn er reeds ruim 200 aanmeldingen, waarvan de helft aanwezig zou zijn in de zaal in Amsterdam. De organisatie hoopt dat dit aantal ook in Berlijn in de zaal aanwezig is.
Er zijn nog kaartjes te krijgen voor dit congres dat in hybride vorm dit jaar aangeboden wordt.
De prijs voor online of in persona is hetzelfde.
