Ricgraph: A flexible and extensible graph to explore research in context from various systems
Abstract
Ricgraph, also known as Research in context graph, enables the exploration of researchers, teams, their results, collaborations, skills, projects, and the relations between these items.
Ricgraph can store many types of items into a single graph. These items can be obtained from various systems and from multiple organizations. Ricgraph facilitates reasoning about these items because it infers new relations between items, relations that are not present in any of the separate source systems. Ricgraph is flexible and extensible, and can be adapted to new application areas.
In this article, we illustrate how Ricgraph works by applying it to the application area research information.

Je logt in op je samenwerkingssoftware, opent je email of volgt een online meeting. Alles werkt goed samen, is makkelijk en het lijkt ook nog eens goedkoop te zijn. Maar het gebruik van big tech oplossingen brengt ook risico’s met zich mee. In mijn onderzoek heb ik mij gericht op de grootste IT-leveranciers bij universiteiten, deze leveranciers beschouw ik hier als “big tech”. Dit artikel gaat over wat door de sector als de grootste risico’s ervaren wordt omtrent deze big tech bedrijven en wat er gedaan kan worden om deze risico’s aan te pakken.
Steeds meer instellingen komen in aanraking met AI binnen onderwijs, onderzoek, en bedrijfsvoering. Deze technologie biedt veel mogelijkheden, maar zorgt ook voor nieuwe uitdagingen. Hoe gebruik je AI op een manier die verantwoordelijk en betrouwbaar is? Binnen de pilot ‘AI ethiek volwassenheidsmodel’ zoeken we het uit. Lees hier meer over onze kick-off bijeenkomst.
SXSW treated us nicely this year and inspired us with lots of new ideas and insights. Founded in 1987 in Austin, Texas, South by South West (SXSW) is best known for its conference and festivals that celebrate the convergence of the interactive, film, and music industries. The event features sessions, showcases, screenings, exhibitions and a variety of networking opportunities. SXSW proves that the most unexpected discoveries happen where diverse topics and people meet.
This year, SURF was represented by three colleagues, Thijs van der Horst, Mark Cole & myself, and we were accompanied by many more Dutch R&E organisations, like Hogeschool Inholland, Hogeschool Utrecht, ROC Mondriaan & Grafisch Lyceum Rotterdam. Even our Minister for Digitalisation, Alexandra van Huffelen, took part in the event.
We immersed ourselves in an 8-day program full of keynotes, featured sessions, workshops and experiences. Here are a couple of takeaways we would like to share with you, out of over 4500 sessions.
Stel je voor: de campus vol studenten met VR-brillen op. Of lege collegezalen, omdat studenten liever leren van hun AI-vriendjes op hun favoriete sociale media platform.
Een realistisch toekomstbeeld? De toekomst van het onderwijs (en onderzoek!) lijkt steeds verder te digitaliseren. Voor mij voelen dit soort beelden soms dystopisch, is dit de wereld waar we naartoe gaan? Wie de toekomst kan voorspellen, mag het zeggen. Maar we maken ook zelf keuzes over de toekomstige inzet van technologie. Hoe vinden we onze weg in dat digitale doolhof?
The focus of this XR Developer Network meeting is on Responsible XR, and specifically the practical aspects you face or are involved in as a developer. How much time and resources do you spend on responsible XR aspects, such as privacy, accessibility of inclusiveness? Do you think these topics are important? Would you like to be more focused on them within your projects, but don't have the means to do so? Etc.
In the session we will have a presentation on Responsible XR from John Walker (from the team Futures & Values at SURF), followed by a more interactive part where you will discuss this topic with the others present.
During lunch after the meeting you can try some new, or less common XR devices.
Responsible AI continues to develop alongside new uses of AI in education. At this years’ onderwijsdagen, Duuk Baten and I took the opportunity to challenge our audience and support them in shaping a better and more responsible future.
The workshop, Immersive ethics, walked participants through three different questions.
Which value is the most important for the future of Gen AI in education?
Can you develop/derive questions from the public value you chose?
What should we do about your concerns/questions?
In a nutshell, the concerns of our participants highlight the need for clear guidelines, regulations, and ethical frameworks to address the challenges associated with the use of AI image generation tools in education, such as midjourney.
Samenwerken in documenten of directe onderlinge communicatie over de grenzen van instellingen heen, is vaak nog lastig. Toch willen onderzoekers, docenten en andere medewerkers van instellingen dat steeds vaker. Drie maanden lang hebben we daarom samen met een aantal leden geëxperimenteerd op het open-sourceplatform Nextcloud.

Het is een kwestie van tijd dat generatieve AI ingebed is in het leven van mensen, ook in het onderwijs. Sterker nog: op allerlei plekken binnen onderwijsinstellingen worden data al geanalyseerd met algoritmes. Maar waar en door wie precies? Hoe zorgen we voor transparantie? En waarom zouden we daar eigenlijk transparant over moeten zijn? Zeker waar de wet dat niet van het onderwijs eist of waar het onduidelijk is wat de wet voorschrijft.
De doelen van een eventueel algoritmeregister en de bijbehorende doelgroepen stonden centraal op de bijeenkomst bij SURF op 28 september 2023. Na een eerste sessie over transparantie van algoritmes bleek dat we hierop verder moesten inzoomen. Dat deden we ook dit keer met vertegenwoordigers uit het wo, mbo en hbo.
