At the 4TU ESDIT conference 2024 at the University of Twente we hosted the workshop “Presenting responsibility as a practice - A response to the gap between academia and reality”. The workshop, in the form of a round table, initiated a dialogue between philosophers, ethicists, technologists, educators, and researchers on how the ethics of technology can be brought into daily practice in the research and education sector.
To shape this conversation, we invited four experts from academia and practice: Taylor Stone (Program and Community manager TUDelft AI initiative), Eliana Bergamin (PhD candidate on Erasmus AiPact at Erasmus University Rotterdam), Frank Benneker (Central Information Manager Education at University of Amsterdam) and Sage Cammers-Goodwin (Postdoctoral Researcher at University of Twente). A total of 18 people took part in the workshop resulting in multifaceted dialogues between different stakeholders.
Vanuit het team Publieke Waarden zijn we binnen SURF veel in gesprek met andere teams, managers en de RvB. Ook zijn er vanuit ons team regelmatige contacten met bestuurders en CSC’s/IT-directeuren van instellingen. Publieke Waarden hebben immers een centrale positie in het onderwijs en bij SURF. Om onze activiteiten breder te delen met collega’s binnen en buiten SURF, starten we met een maandelijkse blog over onze activiteiten op dit community platform.

We recently hosted a Responsible Tech event featuring a world cafe-style activity aimed at enhancing communication of responsible tech values within organisations and institutions.
In een landschap waar technologische innovatie vaak sneller gaat dan het beleid, rijst de vraag: hoe zorgen we ervoor dat deze vooruitgang het onderwijs en onderzoek als geheel ten goede komt? Om dit te bereiken, moeten we publieke waarden verankeren in processen, werkwijzen, beleid en strategie binnen onderwijs en onderzoek.
Binnen onderwijs en onderzoek werken we met elkaar aan een veilige digitale omgeving. Hoe borgen we autonomie, rechtvaardigheid en menselijkheid in een wereld van toenemende digitalisering en afhankelijkheid van leveranciers? Publieke waarden leiden ons daarin om de juiste beslissingen te nemen. Maar hoe maak je dat concreter? De werkagenda 'samen waardengericht onderweg' helpt daarbij.

Ricgraph: A flexible and extensible graph to explore research in context from various systems
Abstract
Ricgraph, also known as Research in context graph, enables the exploration of researchers, teams, their results, collaborations, skills, projects, and the relations between these items.
Ricgraph can store many types of items into a single graph. These items can be obtained from various systems and from multiple organizations. Ricgraph facilitates reasoning about these items because it infers new relations between items, relations that are not present in any of the separate source systems. Ricgraph is flexible and extensible, and can be adapted to new application areas.
In this article, we illustrate how Ricgraph works by applying it to the application area research information.

Maar het gebruik van big tech oplossingen brengt ook risico’s met zich mee. In mijn onderzoek heb ik mij gericht op de grootste IT-leveranciers bij universiteiten, deze leveranciers beschouw ik hier als “big tech”. Dit artikel gaat over wat door de sector als de grootste risico’s ervaren wordt omtrent deze big tech bedrijven en wat er gedaan kan worden om deze risico’s aan te pakken.
Steeds meer instellingen komen in aanraking met AI binnen onderwijs, onderzoek, en bedrijfsvoering. Deze technologie biedt veel mogelijkheden, maar zorgt ook voor nieuwe uitdagingen. Hoe gebruik je AI op een manier die verantwoordelijk en betrouwbaar is? Binnen de pilot ‘AI ethiek volwassenheidsmodel’ zoeken we het uit. Lees hier meer over onze kick-off bijeenkomst.
