After about three weeks, we’re getting used to online education. Or at least, we’re getting used to ‘emergency remote teaching’. In recent weeks it’s been raining advice, tips, examples, webinars and blogs about online learning on Twitter, LinkedIn and via other media. This included many 'quickstarts' and manuals for certain tools, overviews of which tools are suitable for which educational activities and a call to look beyond 'the buttons' and focus on digital didactics, according to many sources substantially different from regular didactics in the classroom. Almost every institution has set up a website with advice and manuals. We try to bundle, interpret and share much of this knowledge through the ‘Vraagbaak Online Onderwijs’. There is no lack of information, on the contrary.
Na een week of drie begint het online onderwijs te wennen. Of in elk geval, het ‘emergency remote teaching’. In de afgelopen weken regende het op Twitter, LinkedIn en via andere media adviezen, tips, voorbeelden, webinars en blogs over online leren. Daaronder waren veel ‘quickstarts’ en handleidingen voor bepaalde tools, werden overzichten gepubliceerd van welke tools geschikt zijn voor welke onderwijsactiviteiten en was er een roep om toch vooral verder te kijken dan ‘de knoppen’, en oog te hebben voor digitale didactiek, volgens veel bronnen wezenlijk anders dan de reguliere didactiek in het klaslokaal. Vrijwel elke instelling richtte een website in met adviezen en handleidingen. Via de Vraagbaak Online Onderwijs proberen we veel van deze kennis te bundelen, te duiden en te delen. Aan informatie geen gebrek dus, integendeel.
Sinds een paar weken moeten alle studenten in het hoger onderwijs noodgedwongen hun lessen en colleges op afstand volgen. Dat is niet niks, zowel voor de docenten als de studenten zelf. Een goed moment dus om aandacht te besteden aan digitale toegankelijkheid in het onderwijs, met name ook voor de studenten met een functiebeperking.
Het overzicht met tools voor online onderwijs is de afgelopen week weer aangepast.

Er zijn twee categorieën bij gekomen:
In de eerste plaats 'live online sessies' (tools voor synchroon online samenwerken, videobellen, webinars en virtual classroom sessies). De tools in deze categorie waren eerst ondergebracht onder 'instructie' en 'begeleiding en feedback'.
Op de tweede plaats 'video'. Hierin zitten applicaties waarmee video's gestreamd, ontwikkeld en gepubliceerd kunnen worden. Deze tools waren eerst ondergebracht onder 'instructie' en 'leerstof ontwikkelen'.
Er zijn diverse nieuwe tools bij gekomen. We hebben nu onder meer alle online proctoring tools, die bij ons bekend zijn, ondergebracht bij 'summatief toetsen'.
Van een aantal tools is de informatie aangepast. Bijvoorbeeld of zij via SURF verkrijgbaar zijn of dat zij aan het Juridisch Normenkader van SURF voldoen.
First, apologies for the ugly and confusing title. I couldn't come up with a worthy literal English translation for the Dutch "geestverruimende middelen" that had the same pun to it for the topic below, in these times of being pretty much locked up at home. So I used the next best thing.
This post isn't about drugs. It could have been, as I live and work in Amsterdam and apparently getting weed online is a thing now that the coffee shops are closed. Instead, this blog is about virtual reality (VR) and more specifically the IEEE Conference on Virtual Reality and 3D User Interfaces (IEEE VR) that was held last week. It was one of the many conferences that was forced to move online due to the corona crisis. One of the side-effects of the current corona situation was that the full online conference could now be attended for free, while it normally costs hundreds of dollars to attend and get access to the proceedings. It was to be hosted in the US this year so attending it online from home was also much more convenient.
The topic of this conference might seem a bit lightweight and hobby-like, but the research presented is very much grounded in science, with many papers using rigid evidence-based methodologies (hypotheses, experiments with subjects, statistical analysis ... the works). And as this was a conference on virtual (and augmented) reality the organizers took the opportunity to host it partly within a virtual world. This turned out be an interesting experiment.
Docenten hebben de afgelopen periode hun best gedaan om hun onderwijs online aan te bieden aan studenten. Sommige docenten deden dat al en moesten alleen opschalen, andere docenten moesten met spoed online onderwijs verkennen.
